Robust Mass Save Incentives for Renovation & Addition Projects in Massachusetts

Mass Save offers comprehensive incentives designed to integrate energy efficiency into home renovation and addition projects in Massachusetts. Under their new 2025 Renovations & Additions Incentive Program, projects that opt to go all-electric may qualify for more robust enhanced incentives.

Incentives Overview

Mass Save provides incentives for various upgrades during renovation or addition projects. Eligible improvements include enhanced insulation, advanced heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, efficient water heating equipment, and air and duct sealing. These upgrades are aimed at boosting the home’s energy efficiency and can lead to significant savings on energy bills.

Residential renovations and additions to single-family homes may be eligible if:

• They are located within Sponsor electric service territories.
• Renovations are extensive and consist of 50% or more of the original home undergoing renovation.
• Additions should be a minimum of 500 square feet of total added floor area and must be all-electric
• A Sponsors of Mass Save-approved certified Home Energy Rating System (HERS) rater, like Home Energy Raters, conducts a preliminary site visit at your home prior to the start of construction or demolition and registers the project with the program

What determines incentives?

There are three pathways to qualify for incentives. The Base tier allows homes with existing fossil fuels to participate and calculates incentives based on a pay-for-savings approach. The Level 1 and 2 tiers require that the home be fully electric post-renovation and provide fixed incentives on a per-unit basis. Additional incentives for specific equipment types and home certifications are available to promote market transformation in single-family home renovations throughout Massachusetts.

Participation Steps

  1. Eligibility Confirmation: Homeowners should first verify their eligibility, which typically depends on the location of the home within Sponsor service territories and the extent of the renovations or additions.
  2. Interest Form Submission: Interested homeowners start by filling out an interest form on Mass Save’s website.
  3. Home Visits: A certified Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Rater – like Home Energy Raters – conducts initial and final site visits. During these visits, they assess the home’s current energy use, recommend efficiency upgrades, and verify the post-renovation improvements.
  4. Incentives Calculation: The incentives are calculated based on the projected energy savings in electricity and fuel, and overall performance improvements over the existing baseline.

Additional Benefits

For homeowners considering renovations or additions, leveraging these incentives can substantially reduce both the project costs and future energy expenses, while also contributing to environmental sustainability.
